Stolen Sweets and Casey McGill’s Blue 4 Trio
The Stolen Sweets are excited to welcome Seattle’s Blue 4 Trio to The Someday Lounge on June 13. Blue 4 Trio will play the opening set, and the Sweets will follow with two sets.
The bands first crossed paths when they played together at the Spokane ThinkSwing! Festival. The players became fast friends, and immediately started making plans to play together again.
Blue 4 Trio consists of crooner Casey MacGill on ukulele, piano and cornet, Mike Daugherty on drums and ukulele, and Matt Weiner on bass. Every once in a while, a band comes along that can genuinely transport an audience to a different era. The Blue 4 Trio is one such group. The band evokes a sense of vintage authenticity, complete with swing garb, effortless musicianship and a natural sense of “cool”. The trio was aptly described as “the personification of swing authenticity” by the Spokane Spokesman-Review.
Casey MacGill is the heart and soul of the band. From California, he is a classic Hollywood character in appearance and style. plays boogie-woogie, swing, and stride piano. He blows a lyrical cornet, and his most unique instrumental voice is a 6-string tenor ukulele. He has been singing and arranging vocal harmonies for almost 30 years, in a career that stretches from Los Angeles (Mood Indigo, feature films “Frances” and “Swing Shift”) to Spokane, WA (The Spirits of Rhythm and the neo-swing classic CD “Jump”) to Broadway (The musical “Swing”) and finally to Seattle.
The New York Times said of MacGill, “The ukulele-strumming band leader has the kind of shrugged-off charm one associates with being cool in the swing era.”
Local jazz group The Stolen Sweets play the 3-part harmony arrangements of the 1930s girl group, The Boswell Sisters. Vocalists Jen Bernard, Lara Michell and Erin Sutherland sing tight 3-part arrangements alongside seasoned guitar players/vocalists Pete Krebs and David Langenes and double bass player Keith Brush. The result is a unique brand of upbeat and contagious vintage jazz.
The Sweets recently returned from their first European tour, and just confirmed their second trip to their favorite home away from home — New Orleans. They will also be opening for Pink Martini at the band’s annual FundFest event at the Crystal Ballroom on June 5.
Both groups have devoted fans in the their respective swing dance communities. Dancers are encouraged to take advantage of the (tiny rough concrete) floors at the Someday Lounge. This is a double bill not to be missed!
